灵 (líng),which is often used in Chinese as an adjective that means 'smart' or ‘workable,' is represented in traditional Chinese as ‘靈.' The traditional Chinese character '靈’ consists of three parts. The bottom part is '巫', which means 'the shaman' and has been introduced before here, while the upper part is '雨' which means 'the rain.' It is noteworthy that situated between '巫' and '雨' are three '口's, which means 'mouth.'

Therefore, the traditional Chinese character '靈' conveys the idea that the shaman uses his/her mouth to pray for rain, and in ancient China this was a common activity during the drought seasons. Definitely, it will be quite '灵' if a rain does come down after prayer.
