‘人’ (rén), which literally means ‘people,’ is another Chinese character that you will likely encounter frequently. The character consists of two strokes which are connected to each other. This character conveys the notion that people in the family, in the community, and in the world as a whole are interdependent. This clearly denotes the concept of collectivism, which is valued by ancient Chinese people.

The tip of the character symbolizes the heaven, while the bottom parts of the character marks the earth. The character ‘人’ reflects the view of the ancient Chinese people that human beings are the third element of the world apart from heaven (‘天’) and earth (‘地’).
