巫 is a Chinese character which literally means “shaman.” The horizontal strokes at the top and bottom represent heaven and the physical world, respectively; while the vertical stroke represents the connection between the heaven and the land. Ancient Chinese people believe that heaven and earth are separate which is why the character ‘巫’, depicts the kind of people who serve as the medium to connect the two parts.

This is embodied in this Chinese character, too— situated on the two sides of the horizontal stroke are two’人’s, which is the Chinese character for ‘people.’ It is clear to see from the character that this type of person helps to build a communication between the heaven and the secular world; that is, they convey the wishes of the world to heaven and bring the words from heaven to earth.
